Many households wash excess food down their kitchen drain every day without even realizing it. As people wash their dinner plates and their breakfast bowls, food particles flow down the kitchen sink drain and start to build up. Most kitchen sink drains can handle a little bit of food, but if there is a large amount of food being put down these drains, it can start to create an obstruction that can be difficult to clear.

When Should I Have My Kitchen Drain Cleaned?

Well one of the first and the most obvious signs that you should have your drain cleaned is that your water isn’t draining as quickly as it once was. Or even worse, if your water is not draining at all. When this happens, most people run to the store and grab a bottle of liquid plumber or Drain-O. Our plumbers at Chicagoland Plumbing, along with many other plumbers, do not recommend using chemical agents to remove obstructions because of the effect they have on the life of the pipes. Instead, we recommend rodding.

How To Clean A Kitchen Drain

When you have an obstruction in your kitchen sink, the best way to clear it is by having the line rodded. This usually entails one of our plumbers removing the p-trap of your sink so that they can access the pipe with the obstruction. They will then use a power rodder to feed a flexible metal rod into the pipe. The power rodding machine will then rotate the flexible metal rod while it is in your pipe in order to clear the obstruction.

How Long Does It Take To Clean a Kitchen Drain

There is no magic formula to tell exactly how long it will take to remove an obstruction. In many cases, our plumbers are able to remove the obstruction within an hour. If it does take longer than an hour, we charge only by the half hour in order to save you money. And once our plumbers are done rodding, they always put everything back together properly and check their work to make sure that the job was done right.
